Ten interior decorating ideas to make you seem sophisticated

Your living space says a lot about you so you want to make sure that it’s saying the right kinds of things. Whether you have just moved into a new space or you’re trying to polish up what you already have, here are ten interior decorating ideas you can do for cheap that will make others thing you’ve got it together (even if you don’t).

    • A well-stocked mini bar. A mini bar screams sophistication. Not only does it look good, but it’s practical as well. If you’ve got a well-stocked mini bar, you’re always ready for an impromptu party or entertaining a few guests. You’ll also save money in the long run by doing more of your drinking at home rather than at a bar. You’ll also find that doing the stocking is fun as well.
    • A designated home office. Whether or not you actually work from home, it’s still a good idea to have a designated office space in your home. It can be an entire room if you have the space for it or it can be a nook in some other part of your home. It gives you a space where you can go into work mode if you need to pay bills, do your taxes, apply for jobs, or organize any important paperwork.
    • A styled bookshelf. Few things will make you seem as grown up as having a bookshelf does. We’re living in a post-book world as more and more people favor a digital collection to accumulating heavy books. But everyone has a handful of favorite hardcovers laying around so you might as well organize them in a way that shows how sophisticated you are. You can have fun deciding how to best organize your collection and you can use your bookshelf to display other knick-knacks or collections as well.
    • Framed artwork. Frames are meant to blend in, not stand out, so you might be surprised at how much of a difference a simple picture frame can make. Hanging posters, photos, and artwork unframed is reminiscent of dorm room days so invest a little money in some quality frames and start showcasing your artwork and photos.
    • A matching dish set. There’s nothing wrong with having your favorite plate, bowl, or cup to use when you’re home alone. But part of being an adult is having a matching dish set for entertaining. So head to the nearest home goods store and pick up a set you like. If you have some money left over, invest in a nice set of matching silverware and glassware as well.
    • A real vanity. I’m not talking about a tiny bathroom mirror above the sink. You need a full-fledged vanity. If your bathroom is on the small side, then you can add a mirror to a dresser or desk in your bedroom instead. You need a full primping station.
    • A real live plant (or two or three). Okay so simply owning a plant doesn’t make you an adult but if you can keep it alive-that requires maturity and no small amount of work. So invest in a few plants to display around your home. That’s the easy part. Then make sure you keep them alive. If you’re always busy, do your research and choose hardy plants that can survive a while without care.
    • A quality mattress and quality bedding to go with it. Time to toss out the $200 mattress and invest in a real bed. Yes they’re expensive but since the average person spends a third of their life in bed, it’s an investment that will get plenty of use. You might as well invest in some high quality bedding for your new mattress as well.
    • A proper bath towel set. Gather up all your mismatched towels and put them in storage or in a designated area for beach/swimming gear. Then invest in some high quality bath towels for your bathroom. You’ll want at least two towels, two hand towels, two wash cloths, and a bath mat.
    • A well-organized closet. The final step for anyone wanting to appear ""put together"" is to have an organized closet space. Buy whatever closet organizing things you need and organize your clothes in a way that makes the most sense for you.
