5 Tips for decorating for a Teenager

Having a teenager is a lot of work without having to worry about whether or not they feel comfortable in their own room. It is important your teen has a space of their own where they can get their homework done and blow some steam as they try to get through the difficult teenage years. But you may not necessarily know how to put a room together they will love. Here are 5 tips for decorating for a teenager.

  •  Start from scratch
The first thing you want to do is start from scratch. You may want to put them in an empty room in the basement or just have them sleep in another room temporarily while you complete the project. Remove everything from the room to get started.
  • Fresh coat of paint
The next thing you should do before moving back in any furniture is get the space looking clean and fresh. This is also a good time to clean carpets if you haven’t done that in a while and get your baseboard radiator covers in place. HGTV suggests letting your teen pick their paint colors to really let them shine. Some may want a crazy color while others might prefer a neutral color, so they can use decorations to bring in pops of color. One way to flash individuality without doing too much is to do one pop wall of color.
  • Furniture options
You will need to figure out exactly which furniture pieces you need in the room. Every teen needs a bed, dresser, and desk for doing school work. If you have room and money, night stands are nice too. If the furniture you currently have is aimed at little kids, then you might want to consider getting a new, matching set of furniture for the room. For larger rooms, you may want to consider accent chairs or tables and an entertainment area.
  • Stylish, yet comfortable
Teenagers are at an awkward-feeling age when they aren’t sure if they want to keep all their stuffed animals on their bed or get rid of it all to feel like an adult. This can make decorating very hard, especially for younger teens that you are hoping will happy with their room for many years to come. The important thing to remember is that the large pieces should be stylish and something they could use at an older age while accent pieces and wall decorations should be more personalized to their current style to make them feel more comfortable.
  • The right bedding
If there’s one thing you know, it is that teenagers like to sleep. So make sure they have a bed in their room that is comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. This is a good time to get a new mattress, and it is an easy place for a teen to pick out their own style. Have them pick the sheets and comforter they love, and give them nice, new pillows. Do whatever you need to do to make sure your teen is comfortable at night and gets the rest they need.
