After paint color has been chosen and the walls are painted, furniture is the next big interior design decision to make. Furniture is second only to paint color when it comes to the effect it has on a space. Since furniture takes up so much real estate, it’s important to put a lot of thought and planning into selecting the right pieces. Here are some tips you’ll want to keep in mind.

 

 

 

• First, look at what you have. Do an assessment of your current furniture. Is any of it worth keeping? If it’s cheap or outdated, throw it out. If it has sentimental value, consider reupholstering it or giving it a new look somehow.
• Purchase larger items first. It’s easier to purchase smaller items that match with larger items so get the big things first. Start with sofas, loveseats, big recliners, area rugs, and dining table sets and only then turn your attention to end tables and smaller furnishings.
• Comfort is critical so sink your money into seating. If you’re on a tight budget, plan to use the bulk of your decorating budget on seating. If nothing else, you at least want to make sure that you have very comfortable seating. If the coffee table or dining table and chairs set is a little on the cheap side, you can live with that and upgrade later, but nothing is worse than a couch you hate to sit on.
• When possible, buy things that last. Unless your budget is very tight, aim to purchase furniture that is durable and will stand the test of time. Don’t feel like you have to buy all your furniture in a month’s time. You can add pieces over time as you save up for them.
• Take advantage of holiday sales. National holidays are a great time to purchase furniture as you can usually get some kind of deal like free delivery or big discounts. You can also check out clearance items or second-hand stores. Remember that used doesn’t necessarily mean poor quality. You can sometimes find great furniture of high quality for a low price on Craigslist. Sometimes just the right piece to finish the look for a room is sitting in a yard sale or antique shop somewhere waiting for you to find it.
